Buddhism is a religion of renunciation - giving up. And, kindness to all living beings. As the Buddha said, "It is one of the ways to observe the righteousness of the Buddhist life." Perhaps, one of the reasons Buddhism didn’t establish strong roots in India was because of its totally renunciant character, as in India most of the rishis who taught the Upanishads were married men.
