In history, when Shankracharya arrived years after Buddha, he preached the teachings of the Upanishads and said, "No amount of ritual, no amount of sacrifice will take you to the Truth." You have to discriminate between what is real and unreal and find the Truth. In fact, Shankara wrote an exposition of the eleven major Upanishads, which speak of the same Truth.
