From grihastha, when your responsibilities are mostly wound up, you are free to spend more time in retirement in a quiet place, free from the troubles of everyday phone calls and so on, contemplating and trying to go deeper into the knowledge that you have acquired during the brahmacharya and the grihastha phases. This is called vanaprastha.
