So, you will notice that Buddhism is basically a religion of renunciation. To follow the path of Gautama, one has to realise the impermanence of this world and give it up to reach Nirvana. ‘Buddham sharnam gachhami’ - I surrender and follow the Buddha. ‘Dharmam sharnam gachhami’ - I walk on the path of righteousness or Dharma. ‘Sangham sharnam gachhami’ - I walk and cooperate in deference and surrender to the Sangha, the group in search of the Truth.
