The Mandukya Upanishad explains AUM as consisting of Aa, Uu and Mm, of which Aa is the waking state, Uu is the dream state and Mm is the deep sleep and Mm as it ends, unsaid unstruck sound is turiya. The Upanishad says that turiya is your true essence. When you have discovered that, you have discovered the Truth.
