The confluence—the sangam of the Varuna river and the Asi rivers — is known as the holy city of Varanasi. The rivers are symbolic of the ‘ida’ and ‘pingala’ meeting at the ‘brumadhya’ or the ‘ajna chakra’, the center between the eyebrows.
