In Sankya, everything is ruled by the three gunas – Tamas, Rajas and Sattva. Simplified, these mean lethargy or darkness, energy for action and goodness respectively. Each person has a different ratio of these gunas within. The idea is to evolve from Tamas - lethargy towards Rajas - activity and, from there, move to Sattva, goodness.
